EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
