A person who contaminated candy with tranquilliser and provided them to minors at a summer program in the region has pleaded guilty to sexual crimes against two children aged nine and 10.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight children and a grown-up experienced illness at the facility in the summer month.

The 76-year-old, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, pleaded guilty to a total of 17 charges when he appeared at the courthouse on the end of the week.

Yet, he refused to admit one particular crime he was charged with, which was against a nine-year-old boy.

The defendant was held in detention prior to a subsequent court date on 28 November.

'Sweet game'

Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, detailed the defendant's actions to the court.

She explained his targets were children from difficult backgrounds who were attending a summer camp which he operated.

The defendant engaged in a "candy game" with the minors, the prosecutor explained, in which he would access the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to consume candy "as fast as possible".

She informed the proceedings the man had conducted this practice with the boys "over an extended period", and youngsters had earlier experienced illness the following morning.

She stated the man had been able to explain this for many years as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had worries in recently.

The legal representative stated further: "This year his family member had suspicions about the activities, for good reason.

"They resolved" to have a look in the defendant's belongings."

The legal counsel stated objects including baby oil, petroleum jelly and medical needles were discovered, and his stepson alerted the police about his worries.

She stated the defendant proceeded to engage in the "treat game" with six children that time - July 26th - and they were everyone unwell the subsequent day.

"Law enforcement" had not arrived by that time," she stated further.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, had stated that it was reviewing law enforcement's management of the incident.

The prosecutor said the youngsters were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson notified the police once more.

She stated the man then played the "candy game" in a room of five minors.
